Guest blogger, Molly Wey, allows us to see the island through her eyes during a romantic anniversary getaway this past December. To learn more about Molly and her blog (Stilettos & Diapers), please visit her website and Instagram, where you can also find a story highlight featuring Amelia Island. Molly, we can’t wait to see you back on Amelia Island soon!
A few years ago, it was decided that a romantic trip was a yearly essential. With the events of 2020, there was hesitancy if it was going to happen. But as our anniversary came around in December, and being a southern gal at heart, the decision was made to head to one of our favorite spots, Amelia Island. Within driving distance of our home in Charlotte, NC, Amelia Island tops the list of favorite vacation spots. This would be the first trip with just the two of us and we were ready to take on the picturesque island with a fresh view. Our goal of the trip was relaxation and we sure did find it!
If you want to wake up to a view of the ocean, the Omni Amelia Island Resort is the perfect spot and our top choice. The grounds are beautiful and provide plenty of nature trails for walking or biking. While we have stayed here before as a family, the Omni also provides many options for couple-friendly activities. With its own championship golf course, a serene spa and an adults-only pool, you will find that the Omni is perfect for romance. Spending quite a bit of time walking on the 3.5 miles of private beaches was a perfect way to enjoy each other’s company, even in December!
This was the trip where the Amelia Island foodie scene really stood out! Maybe it was because there was no need to check for a kid’s menu and that opened up any and all options? Or just the fact that each meal was able to be enjoyed without interruption! The downtown Fernandina Beach area is filled with local restaurants and many with beautiful, outdoor spaces. First stop for lunch was a family-owned local favorite, Cafe Karibo. The setting is enough to want to go back, but the food sealed the deal. Personal tip, do not pass up desserts, either! For a more formal night, our anniversary dinner was celebrated at Joe’s 2nd Street Bistro. It’s located downtown, in a house built in the 1900s. The steaks melt with every bite, they offer delicious desserts and a wonderful wine list. They have an outdoor patio space to enjoy your meal, or even a pre-dinner happy hour if you’re just passing by.Last but certainly not least, is the breakfast tower at Marche Burette Deli. All your breakfast favorites, plus a chef’s special, is stacked high in the middle of your table. This tasteful tower pairs so well with mimosas!
On top of the plentiful beach walks and activities the Omni has to offer, checking out downtown Fernandina Beach was a must as a couple. It was relaxing to walk around, explore the historic buildings, and admire the art displays and the Amelia River. It’s a very colorful area filled with blocks of history and was a way to thoroughly enjoy time on the island.
Our weekend couples’ trip on Amelia Island was just what we needed to refresh and recharge before heading back home to our kids. We can’t suggest a romantic getaway to Amelia Island with your loved one more and we know this will not be our last memorable trip to this special place!
